What is DSC on a Marine VHF Radio?

Digital Selective Calling (DSC) is one of the most important safety features on a modern marine VHF radio. Here's how it works and why every mariner should understand it.

What is DSC?

Digital Selective Calling (DSC) is an automated digital distress and calling system built into modern marine VHF radios. When you press the distress button on a DSC-equipped radio, it automatically transmits a formatted digital distress alert containing your vessel identity and — if connected to GPS — your exact position.

DSC is a core component of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), the international framework for maritime distress communications. It is designed to ensure that a distress alert reaches rescue authorities and nearby vessels as quickly and reliably as possible.

How Does DSC Work?

DSC operates on Channel 70 (156.525 MHz) — a dedicated digital channel on which no voice communications are permitted. DSC-equipped radios continuously monitor Channel 70 in the background, even while you use other channels for normal communications.

When a DSC distress alert is transmitted, it sends a burst of digital data containing:

  • Your MMSI number — a unique 9-digit identifier registered to your vessel
  • The nature of the distress (if selected before transmitting)
  • Your position and UTC time (if the radio is connected to a GPS)
  • The channel to switch to for voice follow-up (typically Channel 16)

The alert is received by the Coast Guard, nearby vessels with DSC radios, and GMDSS shore stations. Rescue coordination centers can identify your vessel immediately from the MMSI number without you needing to speak a word.

The MMSI Number

Your radio's MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) number is what makes DSC work. It is a unique 9-digit number assigned to your vessel — think of it as a phone number for your boat.

In the United States, recreational boaters can obtain a free MMSI number through:

  • BoatUS at boatus.com/mmsi
  • Sea Tow at seatow.com/boating-safety/mmsi
  • The FCC — required for vessels traveling to foreign ports or subject to FCC licensing

Your MMSI must be programmed into your VHF radio before DSC will function correctly. Without it, your radio cannot send or receive properly identified DSC calls.

How to Send a DSC Distress Alert

Most DSC radios have a dedicated red distress button, usually covered by a protective cap to prevent accidental activation. The basic procedure is:

1. Lift the cap covering the distress button 2. Press and hold the distress button for 3–5 seconds 3. The radio automatically transmits the distress alert on Channel 70 4. The radio switches to Channel 16 for voice follow-up 5. Announce your situation using the MAYDAY procedure on Channel 16

If time permits before pressing the distress button, you can select the nature of the distress (fire, flooding, collision, man overboard, etc.) from the menu — this information is included in the digital alert.

DSC for Non-Distress Calling

DSC is not only for emergencies. It can also be used for routine vessel-to-vessel and vessel-to-shore calling. Instead of hailing another vessel on Channel 16 and hoping they are listening, you can send a DSC call directly to their MMSI number — similar to placing a phone call. Their radio will sound an alert, and both radios will automatically switch to a working channel.

Why Every Mariner Should Understand DSC

DSC has fundamentally changed maritime distress communications. A properly configured DSC radio means that:

  • Rescue authorities receive your position automatically — even if you are unable to speak
  • Nearby vessels are alerted immediately
  • Your vessel identity is known before anyone responds

However, DSC only works if your radio is properly programmed with your MMSI number and connected to GPS. A DSC radio without an MMSI or GPS position is far less effective in a real emergency.
